PGF Arizona Last Blast Recap

Whitney Ferguson

February 4, 2021

Voodoo Rhinehart was back at it the last weekend of January, traveling to Phoenix, Arizona for the PGF Arizona Last Blast.

Although the team was not scheduled to play until Saturday, rainouts and closed fields eliminated pool play altogether. The tournament was rescheduled into a double elimination draw that started Saturday morning. Unfortunately, the team had gotten up early expecting an 8am game across town!

In Game 1, Voodoo faced a pitcher from So Cal Athletics who just got better as the game progressed. The team could not get the bats going and lost 0-7. One bright spot was a triple by Lizzie Tieskoetter in the 3rd inning.

The loss moved the team to the loser bracket to face the Arizona Storm. Lindsay Ferguson found herself in a pitcher’s duel. She surrendered one run on five hits over five innings. She had four strikeouts and zero walks for the complete game victory 2-1. Mia Rogers went 2-2 at the plate.

For the next and last game, the team raced across town to a different field only to be delayed two hours. The team finally got on the field around 8pm. Unfortunately, the break cooled the bats, and the girls lost 1-3 against the Verde Valley Heat Elite. Kat Smith had the lone base hit in the game with a bunt single.

After being eliminated from the tournament, some of the girls visited local colleges in the area on Sunday, including Mesa Community College and Grand Canyon University.
